If you know me, you already know I love a good copycat recipe. And while everybody talks about those Texas Roadhouse rolls and that cinnamon butter, let me tell you I can certainly make more than the rolls at home!
In fact, learning how to recreate some of my favorite restaurant dishes is exactly what inspired me to write my copycat restaurant recipe cookbook, You Can Make That $h!t at Home.
Over the last few years, I started noticing something on the rare occasions that I ate out. The food was becoming more mediocre, the portions were getting smaller, and somehow the prices kept getting higher.
And in this economy?! No ma’am.
As my mama would always say, “When you cook at home, you know what you are eating.”
So instead of spending restaurant prices every time I get a craving, I head straight to my kitchen and figure out how to make it myself.
Today, we’re making Copycat Texas Roadhouse Grilled Shrimp, and this recipe is so easy you may think twice about ordering it the next time you go out.
Why You’ll Love This Grilled Shrimp
These jumbo shrimp are marinated with olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic, parsley, oregano and spices before being grilled until tender and slightly charred.
The marinade gives the shrimp plenty of flavor without overpowering them, and because shrimp cook so quickly, this is one of those recipes you can have on the table in no time.
Serve them over seasoned rice, alongside a baked potato and vegetables, or go all the way and make yourself a steak-and-shrimp dinner at home.
Copycat Texas Roadhouse Grilled Shrimp
Servings: Approximately 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes, plus marinating time
Cook Time: 5–6 minutes
Ingredients
● 1½ pounds jumbo shrimp, 16/20 count, peeled and deveined
● ¼ cup olive oil
● 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
● 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
● 3 cloves garlic, grated
● 1 teaspoon dried oregano
● ½ teaspoon paprika
● ½ teaspoon salt
● ½ teaspoon black pepper
● ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
Instructions
1. Make the marinade.
In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, chopped parsley, grated garlic, oregano, paprika, salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper. Stir until everything is well combined.
2. Marinate the shrimp.
Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the bowl and toss until each shrimp is completely coated in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for about 15–30 minutes. You don’t want to marinate shrimp too long because the acid from the lemon juice can begin changing their texture.
3. Prepare the grill.
Preheat your outdoor grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. If you’re using wooden skewers, soak them in water beforehand to help prevent them from burning.
4. Skewer the shrimp.
Thread the shrimp onto skewers, leaving just a little room between each one so they cook evenly.
5. Grill the shrimp.
Place the shrimp skewers onto the hot grill and cook for approximately 2–3 minutes per side. The shrimp are done when they are pink, opaque and lightly charred around the edges. Be careful not to overcook them.
6. Serve immediately.
Remove the shrimp from the grill and finish with a little fresh parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice, if desired.
Sweet Tea Tip- Shrimp cook FAST! Once they turn pink and opaque and begin curling into a loose “C” shape, they’re ready to come off the heat. Overcooked shrimp can become tough and rubbery, so don’t walk away from that grill.
And if you don’t have an outdoor grill, don’t let that stop you. A cast-iron grill pan or skillet works perfectly for this recipe.
What to Serve With Texas Roadhouse Grilled Shrimp
If we’re recreating the restaurant experience at home, we might as well make the whole plate!
Try serving your grilled shrimp with seasoned rice, mashed potatoes, a loaded baked potato, green beans, broccoli, a side salad or pair them with a juicy steak for your own homemade surf and turf.
And yes, if you want the rolls too, make the rolls! 😂
You Really Can Make That $h!t at Home
This recipe is exactly why I love sharing copycat recipes. Sometimes eating out is about the experience, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a restaurant meal. But when I’m paying more money for smaller portions and food that doesn’t always taste as good as I remember, I’m reminded that many of those same meals can be made right in my own kitchen Plus, when I make it myself, I can season it the way I like it, control the ingredients, feed my entire family and usually save some coins while doing it.
That’s the whole idea behind my cookbook, You Can Make That $h!t at Home. It’s filled with 47 copycat recipes inspired by some of the restaurant foods we know and love recreated so you can enjoy them without leaving home. Because like my mama said:
When you cook at home, you know what you are eating.
And around here, we’re saving coins AND eating good!
