Oven Baked Dry Rub Chicken Wings

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

A little bit of smoke and the right amount of heat is the best way to describe these oven baked dry rub chicken wings. Since they are baked and not fried, they make enjoying them guilt free. These are easy to make and you don't need to let them marinate. I used all of the dry rub seasoning on my chicken and they turned out so flavorful without having them to marinate for hours.

The smoky flavor of the adobo sauce from the Chipotle Peppers takes these wings to the next level. I use chipotle peppers alot when making homemade salsa. They keep really well in the fridge if you have some leftovers from making salsa or even this dish. Here's a link to great article on other things you can do with Chipotle Peppers.

The one thing that is key to this recipe is having an oven safe cooling rack. The cooling rack is what is going to make the wings come out crispy because the oil will drip from the chicken down on to the baking sheet.

Ingredients for chicken wings

2 lbs of chicken party wings

2 tablespoons of the sauce from a can of Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce

1 tablespoon of paprika

1 tablespoon of onion powder

1 tablespoon of kosher salt

2 teaspoons of chili powder

2 teaspoons of cumin

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon of ground mustard powder

1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon of ground thyme

Olive oil

Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions to make chicken wings

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F degrees.  Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place a oven safe cooling rack on top of baking sheet spray it with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

  2. Whisk all dry rub ingredients in a small mixing bowl, set aside.  In a large mixing bowl, add chicken wings and vegetable oil. Toss the chicken with the oil until well coated.

  3. Sprinkle the dry rub mixture on to the chicken and massage the rub into the chicken. Make sure it is coated evenly.

  4. Add two tablespoons of the adobo sauce from one small can of Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and massage it into the chicken.

  5. Place the chicken on the cooling rack and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Once you see the skin crispy up, the chicken is done.

  6. Serve with yellow rice and plantains and enjoy!
